I’M BACK

Hi everyone! I’m back from vacation — it went REALLY well, all things considered. I, unfortunately, did not have any time to read all week, so I have no new reviews or anything for you. I’ll get to reading so I can put out some reviews next week, but for now I’ll be catching up on blog hopping and replying to your comments! I hope you all are doing well!

WHAT’S THAT? WHO ARE YOU?

Oh gosh, it’s me, Jordyn, still! I went through a whole rigamarole over the last week. I had originally intended to move to a self-hosted blog, but that did not work out. (Long story short: work blocked my URL and won’t unblock it bc it’s not work related. I primarily blog at work — lots of down time — so I needed access to my blog.) ANYWAY, I’m staying here, with this blog and url. Just changing the title of everything, and the general look of the blog. A FRESH LOOK FOR A FRESH NAME.

JORDYN READS is now BIRDIE’S BOOK NOOK.

Who’s Birdie, you ask? Fair question — Birdie is an old nickname/alias of mine from rp days. For now, we’ll call her my little cat alter-ego for the blog. Her and her friends have taken over my graphics! Don’t like the new look? Don’t worry, it’ll probably change in a couple months. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I can never stick with one look for long. I love messing with graphics way too much.

ANYWAY, that’s all from me regarding…everything. So I’ll be updating all my old stuff to the new look as I go, so don’t worry if you still see some of the old stuff around. It’ll get gone soon. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friends!

SELF-HOSTED WORDPRESS QUESTIONS – CAN YOU HELP?

I’ve been playing with the idea of moving over to a self-hosted WordPress blog. (I’m really tired of the ugly ads on my blog, I want to be able to edit some things I can’t currently, etc.) I have a couple of questions, I’d love for someone in the book blog community to answer for me. Please help?

  • What host do you use? Do you like it?
  • About how much should I expect to spend? I’m not a huge blog, so I don’t need vast amounts of bandwidth, I don’t think…
  • Do you recommend switching over to a self-hosted blog?
  • What should I concern myself with on a self-hosted blog?

Thank you so much!

BLOG UPDATE

Hi everybody! I’ve made the decision (after quite a bit of considering) and I will not be posting on weekends any longer. The minimal engagement doesn’t really make it worth it, and having the extra time will make it possible for me to post more quality content. The schedule going forward will be:

  • MONDAY: Goodreads Monday
  • TUESDAY: Top Ten Tuesday
  • WEDNESDAY: WWW Wednesday
  • THURSDAY: Book review
  • FRIDAY: Book review, tag, recommendation list, or spotlight

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

WHO AM I?

Hi. I’m Jordyn, 32, a new mom, and an avid, avid reader. In the past 5 years, I’ve read over 400 books. Up until this point, all my reviews have been on Goodreads only, but as I move forward with absolutely devouring books, I thought I’d share my thoughts on a space that’s more mine! So hello, and welcome to my thoughts about books.

Some things you need to know, going forward: I read fairly fast. At least two to three books a week, usually. My love of fantasy and magic comes from reading Harry Potter and Old Kingdom series a million times when I was younger.

I read pretty much exclusively on my Kindle. I do LOVE real paper books, but my Kindle is a million times easier to read on. I carry hundreds of books with me a day this way, versus one heavy hardback! Can you carry over 200 books without breaking a sweat? Because I can…on my Kindle.

MY PERSONAL RATING SYSTEM:
5 stars – Perfect in terms of enjoyment.
4 stars – Great, but there were one or two things I didn’t like.
3 stars – Okay, but there was a LOT bothering me.
2 stars – Bleh, too much wrong, but I enjoyed at least a little
1 star – Horrible, nothing redeeming at all

It really does take a LOT for me to 1. rate lower than four stars, and 2. not finish a book. I’m easily entertained, and pretty forgiving once I finish a book. However, if I get at least 20% of the way into a book and I’m not feeling it? I’m going to DNF it. (What’s DNF mean, I hear you ask. It means Do Not Finish.) Life’s too short to read a book I’m not enjoying – something more people should be willing to ascribe to.

My reviews are usually quite concise, and sometimes mostly just me shouting about how much I enjoyed it. I am ALWAYS open to book suggestions, and would love to hear what you guys think on the books I’m reading or reviewing.  Use my contact form if you have something you’d like to suggest to me!

Let’s go!
