THE MID-YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG

Alright, we’ve all seen it, we’ve probably all done it at least once, so you all know the drill by now. It’s time for the MID-YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG. I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but I stole it off of Kaya’s page. ONWARD TO MY ANSWERS!!! Sidenote — if you want to see all my pretty formatting, check it out on my blog, not in the reader! 💜

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU READ?

At the time of writing this, I have read 56 out of the 100 books I’m aiming for. I anticipate needing to bump my end of year goal up later this year, but we’ll see if I actually need to or not! According to Goodreads, I’m 7 books ahead of schedule!

Best book you’ve read so far in 2021

It is, quite literally, impossible for me to pick my favorite book of the year. I’ve read way too many good books this year to pick ONE. So, if you’d like a top four they are: The Drowned Woods, A Taste of Gold and Iron, A Marvellous Light, and The Shadow of the Gods. All were five star reads, and I will be going back to read these again at some point.

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021

the book cover for The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne

It’s rare when a sequel completely lives up to the first book in a series, but boy did The Hunger of the Gods do so. I need everyone to pick this series up immediately, because I need more people to talk to about this one. I can’t wait to find out what happens next with the Bloodsworn, but more importantly, what happens with my girl, Orka. TOO BAD I’LL HAVE TO WAIT AT LEAST A YEAR FOR MORE. 😞

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021

I’ve seen all these books around the book blogging scene as of late, and they all have caught my attention. My hold finally came up at the library for Nettle & Bone, so I’ll be getting to that one before the week is out. I cannot wait to read it!!

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

I have my fingers crossed a million times over for ARCs of The Lost Metal and A Restless Truth. But the other two I have read, and you’ve seen me crow about them over and over. I can’t wait for more people to get their hands on The Drowned Woods, and A Taste of Gold and Iron.

Biggest disappointment

the book cover for Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennett

Locklands. Oh, Locklands. You broke my heart. 💔 I adore the first two books in this series — Foundryside, and Shorefall. But Locklands is just…an on-fire garbage can of mess. It was jumbled together, didn’t make sense in parts, and felt completely separate to the first two books of the series.

Biggest surprise

The book cover for Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott

I had requested an ARC of Dark Earth completely on a whim, and well, it was so, so good. I wasn’t sure what I expected, but it wasn’t a surprisingly detailed view of post-Roman Londinium.

Favorite new author (debut or new to you)

I think I’m going to give this one to Freya Marske and Emily Lloyd-Jones! I haven’t read more than one book by either, but I am DESPERATE to get to the other books by both of these women. They are so creative, and talented, holy crap.

Newest fictional crush

The book cover for House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

Hunt Athalar, enough said.

Newest favorite character

the book cover for The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah

Qadir!!! What a fascinating character. I loved watching layer after layer peel off of him as the story went on in The Stardust Thief! I hope we learn more about his history in the next books in this series, because I am enthralled.

Book that made you cry

the book cover for The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne

I really don’t want to spoil anything, but uh, The Hunger of the Gods hurt. Am I anxiously awaiting the next book? Yes, 100%. Is it probably going to be a couple of years? Yeah. I’m upset about it.

Book that made you happy

the book cover for The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was such a delightful novel. It has the same cozy sort of feeling as The House in the Cerulean Sea, which I know a lot of people point towards as a comfort novel. I hope people get the same sort of vibe here, I know I sure did!

The most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

I haven’t bought many physical books this year — I only buy books that are 1. pretty and 2. I really, really loved as we just don’t have room. Earlier this spring, my husband bought us leather-bound editions of all the Mistborn books. So far, we’ve only received the first book, but it is a STUNNER.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

So, so many. So many that I don’t actually have a list? I’m going to keep chugging away at my ARCs, and catch up on some backlist titles. As long as I don’t let my Netgalley rating dip down too much, I think I’ll be in a great spot.

Favorite book to movie adaptation you’ve seen this year?

With a toddler, it’s not often I find time to actually binge anything. So, really, the only book-to-film adaptations I’ve seen this year are Bridgerton’s season 2, which I liked, and The Expanse‘s last season. I am a huge fan of The Expanse tv show, and I hope more people pick it up soon! (I don’t even want to say how long it took me to watch either of these. Way, way too long.)

FAVORITE POST YOU’VE WRITTEN SO FAR THIS YEAR?

I think this probably goes to all my recommendation or spotlight posts! In particular, my spotlight on Brandon Sanderson, or my recommendation list for beginner fantasy reads.

Now that I’ve formatted this post to heaven and back…here it is, my Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag! I’m not really freaking out — I think I’m in a great place for this time of year! I hope you are, too. Consider yourself tagged, if you haven’t done this already!

  1. In my opinion, Bridgerton Season 2 is the superior season😂 Also, I’m super excited for Sangu Mandanna’s new book. If you haven’t yet, check out her A Spark of White Fire Series.
